People who have diabetes are
more likely to have heart attacks
or develop heart disease than
people who don’t have diabetes,
according to the National Heart,
Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI).
For men, the risk is double; for
women, the risk is triple.
Yet there are many things you
can do to help keep your heart
healthy.
What can I do?
To help your heart stay healthy,
the NHLBI recommends that you:
»
Work with your doctor to keep
your blood sugar level under
control and take all medications
exactly as prescribed.
Diabetes—Take this information to heart
»
Eat a balanced diet that is low in
saturated fat, trans fat, choles-
terol, sodium and added sugar.
»
Lose weight if you’re overweight.
»
Make physical activity a priority.
Find activities that you enjoy, but
make sure you have doctor’s OK
to participate.
»
Don’t smoke. Talk to your doctor
about programs and products
that can help you quit.
»
Manage stress. Try to avoid situ-
ations that make you angry, and
look for time during your day
when you can relax.
Make it a team effort
Talk to your doctor about which of
these strategies are most impor-
tant for you.
All programs are offered in English only unless otherwise stated.
