Sleep Problems: Snoring

Thursday, Sept. 22 10–11 a.m. Ted Shen, MD, otolaryngology, ENT

Snoring is the vibration of respi-ratory structures and the result-ing sound due to obstructed air movement during breathing while sleeping. In some cases the sound may be soft, but in other cases it can be loud and unpleasant.

Snoring is known to cause sleep deprivation for snorers and those around them as well as daytime drowsiness, irritability and sometimes a lack of focus. Snoring can also be associated with complex conditions such as sleep apnea. Multiple stud-ies reveal a correlation between loud snoring and increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

Dr. Shen will discuss the latest diagnosis and treatment op-tions that can help you achieve a good night’s sleep and keep you healthy.

Vaccinations Aren’t Just for Kids

Tuesday, Sept. 27 1:30–2:30 p.m. Joel Streng, MD, infectious diseases

Far too many adults become ill or disabled or die each year from diseases that could eas-ily have been prevented by vaccines. Thus, everyone from young adults to seniors can beneft from immunizations. Unfortunately, some adults were never vaccinated as children or the newer vaccines were not available when some adults were children. Immunity can fade over time, and we become more susceptible to serious diseases caused by common infections such as flu and pneumonia.

Dr. Streng will speak about what immunizations we should have and why, when we should get them, and how often we should repeat them.
