Volunteer services and the info desk

Customer service begins with a smile and is about care and compassion. The volunteer services staff and volunteers are ready to assist in making a smooth transition for patients and visitors. The redesigned information desk will be located in the North Tower across from the new main lobby entrance. Information desk volunteers are ready for any new challenges with this transition and will continue to give the same outstanding customer service to patients and visitors.

In addition, volunteer services is developing an errands and support service that will complement the service supplied by volunteers at the informa-tion and admitting desks. It will include volunteers stationed on each foor near the North Tower eleva-tors to assist and direct visitors.

Materials management

Although materials management will not be mov-ing to the North Tower, the department’s daily operations, including purchasing, distribution and central service, will work together to achieve a positive outcome for patients, doctors and clinical staff. Materials management staff is working with other hospital teams to ensure a smooth transi-tion for both the new and existing buildings. The department strives for the “on-stage/off-stage” ideology, which means when delivering supplies or equipment to locations, personnel try to de-liver supplies and equipment to various hospital locations unobtrusively without infringing in the patient and family areas.

Information technology

Methodist Hospital is moving toward “The Next Generation of Communications” with its newVoice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). VoIP sends and re-ceives calls over our data network instead of having a separate telephone system. The IT department is also working with the facilities staff to integrate new wireless phones with the nurse call system so that patients can contact nurses directly.

In addition, the implementation of RFID (Radio Frequency Identifcation) will allow the hospital to transmit data wirelessly through a small chip and antenna. This technology will allow for such things

as remote temperature monitoring of refrigerators throughout the hospital and remote asset tracking to locate items for inventory control, thus enabling greater effciency with our resources.

North Tower: Built for safety

The North Tower is a state-of-the-art facility built with many safety features. These include ergonomic workstations, fre compartments that allow for horizontal and vertical evacuation, evacuation and exit-route signs to allow for safe exiting of the build-ing, emergency power sources (red outlets), and emergency communication (emergency radios and total power failure phones—a.k.a. “red phones”).

Additionally, the North Tower and areas of the ex-isting hospital will have a high-tech access control system that will promote tighter access control for high-risk areas such as critical care, emergency services and pharmacy. These controls provide enhanced security measures and allow staff to de-liver “The Next Generation of Care” to our patients. Ultimately, it is the knowledge and preparedness of our staff that truly makes Methodist Hospital a safe environment for our patients, visitors and staff.
